His four children who survived to apply for Social Security numbers all listed his name as Isaac HIBEL on their application forms. Family lore has it that the name was originally HUBEL (with an umlaut over the U).
However... all the documentation that we have says she was born between 1889 and 1893. If the family didn't come over until 1895 or 1896, she MUST have been born in Europe as the 1900 census notes! That, or she was several years younger than she claimed and the family lied about her birth year and location on the 1900 census (why would they do that?)... Or the family lied about their immigration date on the 1900 and 1910 censuses (why would they do that?). The simplest explanation is that the 1900 and 1910 censuses are correct regarding Laura's birthplace and birthdate, and the dates started getting fudged later on. BUT - we must get Louis, Isaac, and Harry's naturalization papers to see which it is.
No sign whatsoever of them in the Ellis Island or Canadian or even Hamburg passenger records for any year under any variation on the name HIBEL/HUBEL - have tried HIBEL, HEBEL, HUBEL, HYBEL, HYBAL, HUEBEL, HEUBEL. Even tried wildcards when allowed - H%B%L, H_B_L, H__B_L, even H_BLE. Nothing. I have also tried LEVINTHAL, LEVENTHAL, LOWENTHAL, LEVENBAUM, and variants. Nothing. Finally, I tried FORMAN and its variants. This may or may not have found a match (see below). You can try to search yourself via Steve Morse's Ellis Island Search Engine.

Using Mapquest, I determined that 433 Rockaway Ave. is between Pitkin Ave. and Belmont Ave (much closer to Pitkin).
Thanks to Steve Morse's census ED ID program, I plugged in these street names to get the 1910 US Census ED for this address: 731. His program says this ED is on NARA Roll: T624_976 FHL Roll: 1374989.
Now, to check the 1910 census for this address to see if anyone we know is living there...
Continuing, I got the 1930 US Census ED for this address: 24-568. NARA Roll: T626_1543 FHL Roll: 2341278.
His program used the 1930 ED to determine that the 1920 US Census ED for this 1930 Census ED would be either 1500 or 1501.

Louis HIBEL, 23 years old, b. Russia; wife Rose (22?) and son Sydney (8 months old).
The 1910 census says Louis immigrated in 1895 and had already applied for his naturalization papers, and that Rose immigrated in 1890.
Click here to see these HIBELs in the 1910 Census. They're the second family from the top.

Louis (32 years), Rose (28 years), and Sidney (10 years) HIBLE (that spelling)
This one says he's 32 and was born in Russia; came over in 1905; naturalized in 1914. He couldn't have come over in 1905 if he was in the 1900 census. Other info seems to match, so I'm guessing it was a census taker's error and not a different Louis-Rose-Sidney family.
My great-grandma Laura is listed under her first of four husbands, my great-grandpa FARBER, Israel.
This census says she's 27 (ie. was born in 1892) and was born in NY.

His program alternately (an error, I believe) gave the ED as 23-731 and said this ED is on NARA Roll: T626_976 FHL Roll: 2340711, but another of his programs says this second ED is Jefferson County (23), not Kings (24) and that ED 23-731 does not exist...

...and is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Maspeth NY, Cg. Tef. Bn. Jac. Rabbi Meyer Premishlaner. His tombstone says he was the son of Zvi Hirsch and that he was 77 years old (ie. was born in 1858). The burial card says he was 71 years and change (ie. was born in 1864). Quite a range, although typing "71" instead of "77" or vice-versa isn't unheard of. Before he died, he was living in Richmond Hill NY.
On it, he lists his birthdate as May 1887 and his birthplace as Lemberg, Austria. He gives his mother's maiden name as Bessie FORMAN. He lists his address as 7314 17th Avenue, Brooklyn and was then working for the A&T Dress Company on Seventh Avenue in NYC.
On it, he lists his birthdate as April 1896 and his birthplace as Brooklyn. He gives his mother's maiden name as Bessie FORMAN. He gives himself the middle name Louis, which would be unusual since he has a living older brother named Louis. He lists his address as 4205 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn and was then working for Ft. Hamilton Auto Supply on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn.
...and is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Maspeth NY, Cg. Tef. Bn. Jac. Rabbi Meyer Premishlaner, next to her husband Isaac. Her tombstone says she was the daughter of Israel and died at age 88 (ie. was born in 1861). Her burial card says she was 82 years old (ie. was born in 1867). Again, quite a date range.
On it, she lists her birthdate as February 1901 and her birthplace as Brooklyn. She gives her mother's maiden name as Bessie LOWENTHAL. She is living at 7 Monroe Street in Brentwood NY (on Long Island) and runs a liquor store on Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood.
Here she says she was born in September 1892 in New London, CT. The marriage certificate was registered in August 1971. The couple was living in the Bronx at the time.
On it, she lists her birthdate as September 1892 in one place on the form and 1893 in another and her birthplace as New London CT. She gives her mother's maiden name as Bessie LEVENTHAL.
