Dad's parents are Fannie (Fay) Stern and Samuel (Scheil) Louis Cohen.
Samuel's parents were Miriam Nozick (we knew her as Newman) and Abraham Kagan ("Kagan" got changed to "Cohen" when they came over; when my dad got married, he changed his name back to "Kagan"). Miriam's passport says "Mere Sheveleva" on it in Russian; translation - "Mary/Miriam, daughter of Scheil/Shaul".
10/19/99 update: One of my dad's cousins just e-mailed me a wonderful spreadsheet with tons of information on Miriam's parents, siblings, and their many children. It seems NEWMAN was originally NOZICK... It will take a long time for me to integrate all of the details my database, so for now I'll just note what I can here:
Direct ancestors & their siblings' spouses' family names:
Miriam/Mary's father was Scheil Nozick/Newman; my grandpa Sam once said he had been named for this man. As confirmation, "Mere Sheveleva" would be "Mary/Miriam, Shaul's daughter" in Russian.
Malka Nozick/Newman and husband Itzhak Horowitz' descendants' family names: Biberman, Greenberg, Ralgolsky, Seigel, Stevens
Muta Nozick/Newman and spouse Shima's descendants' family names: Mizrachi, Gutterman, Gaines/Ginsberg
Hillel Nozick/Newman and spouse Bella's descendants' family names: Feinberg, Tictinsky, Weinberg, Snell, Muhlin, Slutsky/Slater, Cohen, Bergman, Tabochnick, Becker, Newman, Sklar, Alexander
Bessie Nozick/Newman and spouse Harry Farber's descendants' family names:
Feinberg, Klein, Dessel, Tish
AFAIK, this Harry Farber is not related to the
Farbers
on my mother's side, but it'll take me a while to be sure.
Here is a more detailed HTML version of the above data.
Grandpa's surviving siblings/their children live in Texas and New Jersey. If you are or know one of the people listed above, please contact me.
E-mail me if you have questions or think you've found a connection, or if you'd like to be listed (e-mail address and/or URL) as a fellow researcher for one of these names.
