WOLFSONT/WOLFSHAUT family summary

The name, as best we can determine, was originally WOLFSHAUT. In our family, the only variant is WOLFSONT; it resulted from a series of misreadings and errors. We have found other WOLFSHAUT families with spelling variants that include WOLFSHANT, WOLFSHOUT, WOLFSHONT, WOLFSOUT, etc. We have also found WOLFSHAUT families who abbreviated their names on purpose to WOLFSON, WOLFS, and WOLF.

The towns that seem to be most associated with the surname are Belyi Kamen (Biliy Kamen, Bialykamin, Bilii Kamien, Pilkyman), Sasov (Saczow, Sassow), Przemysl (Pchemychl, Premisl), and Zolochev (Zlutchif, Zloczow; even spelled "Hocson" in at least one poor online transliteration), all in Galicia (Austria/Poland). All are now in Ukraine except for Przemysl, which falls within the bounds of present-day Poland. Most, if not all, of these WOLFSHAUT lines had at least one member come through Ellis Island and settle in New York, although we have found mention of one or two who ended up in Philadelphia and one family in the 1920 US census in Chicago. We have also found at least one branch of WOLFSHAUTs who still live in Romania and a few unclaimed WOLFSHAUTs mentioned in vital records and other documents in England. Browse the list archives (link below) to see a lot of this information.

Since the WOLFSHAUT surname is so unusual, we are interested in any and all information you may have on ancestors or records with this surname, anywhere in the world. Perhaps we're all cousins after all...

WOLFSHAUT/WOLFSONT: My mom's father's side:

My full WOLFSHAUT descendancy is here. It includes everyone in my direct WOLFSHAUT branch. Elsewhere in this WorldConnect database are some of the other WOLFSHAUT branches I've come across as well; you can examine them there.

Descriptive overview of the above descendency is here, also at WorldConnect. Quickie tree overview on RootsWeb. Names & dates. Names are the original birth names - still trying to get AKAs recognized.

Mom's parents are Ruth FARBER and (Grandpa has e-mail!) Mel WOLFSONT.
They were born in 1918 and 1920, here in the states (NY).

Mel's parents were Fannie (Feigel?)BOMZE and Morris WOLFSHAUT. However, I've just found out that BOMZE was originally BOMSER.
Morris was from Bialykamin, Austria. It's in what is now southeast Poland. One correspondent told me: "Bialy kamien (the Polish name ) is now called Biliy kamin, simply the Ukrainian translation of the Polish name, which in English means White Rock." Morris worked for the train company. He was born in or around 1886 and died in 1958. Fannie was born in or around 1887 and died in 1959.

Mel has a brother named Abraham (now Allen), who is still alive, and sisters named Mary, Anne, and Ethel, all deceased.
Allen WOLFSONT married a woman named Sophia. They had no children.
Mary WOLFSONT (b. 1910, d. 1990) married a man named Abraham ("Boomey") GREENHILL. Their daughter is Jane.
Anne WOLFSONT (b. 1907; d. 1995) married a man named Harry BAUMANN (b. 1907; d. 1980s). Their children are Elinor (Ellie, b. 1939) and Holly (b. 1946).
Ellie BAUMANN married Arnie/Arny BERNSTEIN - they'd gone to high school together. Arnie/Arny's father, Harry BERNSTEIN, was from Lodz/Lotz/Lutz, Poland and came to the U.S. by 1915. Ellie and Arnie/Arny have three children, David, Debbie, and Danny, all of whom are now married.
Ethel WOLFSONT/WOLFSHAUT (b. 1907, d. 1999) married a man named Irving HIRSCH. Their children are Lois HIRSCH and David HIRSCH.

Mel's father Morris had a sister named Bertha WOLFSONT/WOLFSHAUT.
Bertha married Samuel LEBENSFELD. Their children were Harry, Aaron, David, and Helene.
Morris may have had another sister named Advera - either that, or Advera was Morris' mother's name. We're not sure.
Morris's father was Abraham WOLFSHAUT. Abraham died before or around 1905 in Poland.

I've come across at least two other people named WOLFSHAUT--one in Michigan, and one in Paris (see Markus Dinkes-Wolfshaut in this Przemysl Yizkor book --but we can't make a definitive link between them and our branch. Since Grandpa's started using the Net, he's found some other WOLFSHAUTs. They all seem to be from the same general area as my great-grandparents, but we can't find a hard connection yet. One of the possibly-related families I've come across is from Przemysl (aka. Pchemychl).

The AJGS Cemetery Project keeps information on Jewish cemeteries around the world. On their Poland/Pn-Pz page, they mention two Jewish cemeteries in Przemysl, one with surviving tombstones, and says Przemysl is discussed in another book as well. The above-linked page says: "Przemysl in Przemysl Province, 49.48N 22.47E, is 86 km from Rzeszow" You can also find out about Przemysl on the Przemysl Shtetlinks site at JewishGen.

The AJGS Cemetery Project's Ukraine/B page lists Bialykamin (Belyi Kamen I) cemeteries. This page says Bialykamin is "in Lvovskaya Oblast at 49º54' 24º50', 73 km from L Lvov."

The AJGS Cemetery Project's Ukraine/S page lists Sasov cemeteries. This page says Sasov is "in Lvovskaya Oblast at 49°52' 42°38', 8 km from Zolochev."

The AJGS Cemetery Project's Ukraine/Z page lists Zolochev cemeteries. This page says Zolochev is "in Lvovskaya oblast at 49º40' and 42º35', 64 km from Lvov."
